Having read countless books on leadership it is difficult not to be immune to the academic recounts and blurb that are often found to be lacking! In contrast I found Inspiring Leadership to be totally refreshing and an absolute must read for all leaders. As a Personal Coach, Jonathan has (in my experience) a rare insight into the multitude of factors which influence one's behaviour and an ability to help one see the choices available with a blinding clarity, and he has been able to reflect much of this skill in his book. The way in which he tells of his personal voyage is engaging, warming and inspiring. I found it hard to put the book down!
In my experience, it is rare to read a book where the author gives so much of themselves with the aim of improving others. This is a warm, heartfelt and compelling read where autobiographical experiences and real life case studies combine to create a "can't put down" read. The practicality and narrative of Inspiring Leadership combine to energise you and propel you to take action and see immediate results - Outstanding!
This book encapsulates Jonathan's magnetism and inspiration. It is his life story and what has shaped the leadership values and principles he clearly displays and develops in others. I particularly enjoyed the realness of the narrative, the constructive influence of army experiences applied to the business world and the structure and theory surrounding the compass model. There is some real learning in the book and you are left with a warm, feel-good factor.
I have just finished re-reading this book and I very much enjoyed it. I would say that it is inspiring, reminds one of earlier lessons, gives some new ones and allows one to see some things from a different point of view. I admire the fact that Jonathan put so much of himself in there which I think is brave and supports his ethos as an inspiring leader. I have also had the privelege of attending a talk by Jonathan and meeting him and the experience was inspiring.
I shall be re-reading my underlinings!
I think this is a brilliant book.
Each chapter is rich with stories, examples and advice gained from personal experience. Highlights for me include Oliver Johnson's definition of 'inspiring' and his thoughts on the topic of 'less', the audit to identify an appreciative culture, lessons from Sandhurst, the example of Richard Dannatt and the techniques offered for identifying one's own 'True North'.
A short review cannot do justice to the value of this book I recommend reading it in full. Even after a year has passed since I read it, I still find myself referring to it on a regular basis.
